American Doctorate Degree Programs at Brown University – Background

The Ivy League college Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island offers a number of doctorate degree programs that are primarily research-oriented. Brown has educated people since 1764, and is the seventh oldest university in the United States.

Since the 2006-2007 school year, Brown has guaranteed that all students in their doctoral degree programs will receive five years of financial support as long as they make acceptable academic progress toward their degree. Their generous subsidy package also includes a living-expense stipend and health insurance, making it easier for people from all walks of life to gain experience and study at Brown.

Admissions requirements are stringent, and typically require original transcripts of earlier institution attended, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general and subject tests, three academic and professional letters of references and recommendations, and college writing samples. International students will include recent TOFEL or IELTS results, if English language is not their native language. Once the admitted student finishes three years of full-time graduate study, the typical amount of time required to obtain a master’s degree, he or she is eligible to advance to the dissertation phase. It traditionally takes four to five years for the study, research, and writing of the dissertation.
