The University of Pennsylvania, commonly called Penn, is a large private research institution that is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the first university established in America and the fourth-oldest higher education institution in the country. It is one of the Colonial Colleges and a member of the Ivy League.

The University of Pennsylvania offers over 50 doctorate degree programs in a variety of areas including: Accounting, Africana Studies, Biology, Communication, Education, Management, Nursing, Political Science, Religious Studies, and Statistics.

American Doctorate Degree Programs – Course Structure

Doctorate degree programs have many program requirements that students must meet prior to admission. Each PhD program has different specific requirements, but the general requirement is a bachelor or master degree or equivalent. Teaching and master, written, and oral examinations are also required. Students must show a research competency and complete a PhD preliminary exam in the third year. Years 4 and 5 are usually for dissertation research and completion.

American Doctorate Degree Programs  – Requirements

To apply for Penn’s PhD programs, students must apply directly to the program of interest. The application is available online for most programs. All applicants must submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), a completed application, application fee, college transcripts, other required test scores, and three letters of recommendation. Non-native speakers must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores.

Most students admitted to American Doctorate Degree Programs programs will receive financial packages to cover expenses for four or more years. These awards will vary depending on the student and program. Additional financial aid is available through grants, loans, and scholarships.
